Kenneth Jarecke, Beijing Opera, 2007
These images are from a short visit I made to Beijing in May of 2007. This was my first trip back to the city since the massacre in 1989 (I'd been through the airport, but not into the actual city). I was stunned, which is saying a lot for a guy who prides himself on never being stunned.
It might as well have been a different city. I didn't even recognize the place.

It was weird, going back after so long. I just walked around and made a few frames, visited places where I spent the night, made a certain picture, or thought things were really going good, or bad depending on the day.
I guess the weird part is having all of these memories from a place, a time in history, that is basically unknown to all of the people who's country this happened in.
It should be their memories.
Well, what are you going to do?
