Beijing Olympics July 31 Part 2

Well, I'm unable at this time to see my own blog, but it appears I can post.

I'll just report on some of my experiences today.

Everything went well at the airport. There was no line at the credential verification center.

All my bags arrived and I made it through customs with no problems. I didn't bring a carnet. I rarely do. They seemed more concerned about video cameras than stills.

The 40km drive to the hotel took about 40 minutes. This was at rush hour, so that's a very good time for Beijing. It cost about $10, including toll.

My hotel is right next to the Olympic Green, but I'm pretty sure you can't get there by walking. There's a shuttle that leaves every 30 minutes, and it takes about 19 minutes to get to the Main Press Center (MPC).

I got here four days early, so the hotel was kind of surprised to see me. Regardless, they were cool.

If you have a problem looking kind of simple and helpless, you should probably travel with a carnet and not arrive early to the hotel. Luckily I don't have that problem.

The rooms are great. They have a full kitchen, a balcony, a washing machine and one of those things that presses your trousers, so I expect I'll be looking pretty snazzy throughout the games.

I took a peek at the reservation list and was happy to see that the SPORTS ILLUSTRATED and NEWSWEEK teams are staying here, so it'll be nice to see those guys.

It was pretty hazy this afternoon, which means we might have that nice orange light that Beijing is famous for after all.

My normal email isn't working, so I'll be on kenj454 (at) yahoo (dot) com, if you need to reach me.

No picture today. I just can't do the whole self-portrait in the hotel mirror right now.

I so wish...

As you read this I'm on my way to Beijing. I hope the chinese men in black aren't waiting for me when I arrive (Those guys have no sense of humor.). I'm going to try and write everyday, but I'm not sure if I'll be allowed. There are mixed reports coming out about blogging from there.

So we'll see.

Honestly, I've never had a problem there before.

This is actually Bikini Kill's classic "Rebel Girl".
