While driving around last Saturday, two of my children got into a little competitive photo-graphing with their Nintendo DSi's. Fair enough, but there's no way I'm going to judge the winner. I'll let all of you do that.
The photos are numbered, just give us your picks in the comments below. I'll score three points for first, two for second, and one for third.
There's cash involved, twenty bucks for first, fifteen for second, and ten for third. Yes, I'm a cheap dad, but I'm not going to steal their copyright like so many other contests today.
The competitors are ages 13 and 11.
Although I can't readily place their influences, I'll tell you they've been exposed to a lot of quality photography books. I'm not sure what affect I've had on them (photography wise), but they both quickly informed their mother that setting-up images was strictly forbidden (when she made a "helpful" suggestion), because daddy doesn't. Big smile on that one! (I wonder how so many journalists have somehow missed that lesson?)
The contest will officially end at 4pm MST on Friday the 16th (so they can use their winnings to see a movie or something).
They did their own edit. They each have five images posted here.
I did a slight curve adjustment on each frame and a tad bit of sharpening. Besides those two things, these files are pretty close to what the DSi's pump out.
I refrained from coaching. I didn't want to tarnish how they see things.
This is all in good fun. Suggestions and/or criticism is encouraged, but please don't be cruel.
I'm excited to see how this turns out.
I'll post the results on Monday, July 19th.
Thanks!
My vote on all these contenders - every one of them a keeper - in the order of how much they appeal to me, starting with the most appealing, to me: 6, 7, 9, 2, 8, 4, 5, 3, 1. You kids ROCK!

5,6,9,4,2 in order, but they're all great, If you don't do something fast about this they might become photographers.

great stuff. another proof that cameras are overrated and photographers are underpaid.. *g*
first: 6 "hay explosion"
second: 4 "while the wind blows" - just look at the lens not the display next time when you take the picture. that cost you first place. ;)
ex aequo on third: 10 "life in an aquarium" / 5 "roadside bride"

My number one choice is #6 (Hay flying in the wind). I am not sure how you were able to catch this shot with a DSi!!!
My second choice is #4. I may be bias. But, it is a beautiful picture :)
My third choice is #3. It just looks very artistic!
Good Luck!!!

I vote 9 (reminds me of the locust plague in Bible, eery and complex,) 5 (love the juxtaposition of the beaming bride and stormy clouds... looks like there's an escape route implied in the photo!) and 4 .... mostly because I love Yasmine and think dread locks would be a really good look for her. LOVE IT, Ken! You're creating something generational!!!!!

#4 ~ the face, close up and personal enough that the wind blown locks and the face work together beautifully.
#6 ~ that haybale — I'm amazed and wondering how you could get it!
#9 ~ grasshopper in the sky! The darkness and wind in the lower left could perhaps be seen as implying a forthcoming plague of locusts....
#10 ~ lots of layering to like and to think about.
#5 ~ the bride by the wayside! There's a story there, especially when read from left to right, with the bride starting the story out (but not being in the center of the frame) and the weather and the tilt and the little shack taking more of the frame and so more of the story. Ordinarily trees probably shouldn't grow out of peoples' heads, but in this case, it almost looks like the hair of the bride is standing straight up standing up, which adds more dimension to the untold story! (OTOH, she's probably a friend who's happy as a clam and glad you all could give her best wishes as she crosses the street to her new husband's car!)
#1 ~ nexus of wires, well seen and composed as you place ALL those wires in a way that they really work together to make a picture.
#6 ~ I like the cats single eye peeping out from beneath that abundance of flower, which makes a nice compositional contrast.
I like the others, too ` the prancing colt contrasting with the gait of his mother, and the interesting added visual element of the window glass, and I like the way you've seen the backs of the other horses, but the ones I've listed first are still my favorites.
Keep it up, both of you! Well done, indeed!!!
